EARTH＋GALLERYでは、ヒルトン東京(新宿)との協働プロジェクトとして、Hilton TOKYOロビーフロアChocolate Loungeにて、2か月毎に企画展を開催し、日本で活躍しているアーティストを海外からのお客様へ紹介しています。
2026年2月1日から3月31日までの2か月間は、「COEXIST - 創造と破壊のあいだに生きる Living in the Space Between Creation and Destruction」をテーマに、34年にわたり炭を研究し続けてきたアーティストであり、炭化技術の先駆的研究者の松下康平の個展を開催いたします。
松下康平にとって、技術、芸術、環境ビジネスは分断された領域ではありません。それらはすべて、「人間はいかに自然と共存できるのか」という一つの問いによって結びついています。太古から存在し、同時に未来を内包する元素「炭」を通じて、松下康平は、私たちが生きる時間と、それを支える環境との関係を本質的に問い続けています。
水の浄化、農業用バイオ炭、さらには石炭代替燃料となるバイオマスカーボンやバイオマスコークスなど、廃棄物を価値ある資源へと転換する独自の炭化システムを開発してきました。これらの技術は、産業分野における脱炭素化を実現する実践的な環境ソリューションとして高い評価を受けています。
一方で松下は、日常的な物の本来の用途を解体し、新たな意味を持つ素材として再構築する表現活動を長年続けてきました。素材を「時間」の集積として捉え、層状に重ねることで、創造と破壊という人間の根源的な循環を作品の中に映し出しています。
これまで海外のアートフェアにて評価を受けてきた代表作「黒の微」に加え、新作を発表いたします。この機会にぜひ環境テクノロジーとアートの融合として唯一無二の松下康平の作品をご高覧いただけますと幸いです。
Kohei Matsushita is both an artist and a leading researcher in carbonization technology, having devoted more than 34 years to the study of carbon.
He has developed original carbonization systems capable of transforming a wide range of discarded materials into valuable resources, including water purification media, biochar for agricultural soil improvement, and biomass carbon and biomass coke that serve as alternatives to coal.
These technologies have drawn significant attention as practical environmental solutions contributing to a decarbonized society.
At the same time, Matsushita has long pursued artistic expression through the act of dismantling the original purpose of everyday objects and reconstructing them as materials imbued with new meaning.
By treating materials as representations of “time” and layering them sequentially, his works reflect the fundamental human cycle of creation and destruction.
For Matsushita, technology, artistic practice, and environmental enterprise are not separate domains.They are united by a single, enduring question: How can humans coexist with nature?Through carbon—an elemental material that is both ancient and forward-looking—Kohei Matsushita continues to quietly yet profoundly question the relationship between the time we inhabit and the environment that sustains us.
Statement
人は古来より、創造と破壊を繰り返しながら生きてきた。
生と死、有と無、発生と消滅。相反する両極のあいだにこそ、人間の営みは存在している。
松下康平の作品は、その「あいだ」を可視化する試みである。
長年にわたり研究を続けてきた炭化技術は、役割を失った存在の用途を一度「破壊」し、熱と時間を通じて、
まったく異なる価値と意味を与える。水を浄化し、土壌を再生し、エネルギーとなる炭へ。
それは消滅ではなく、変容であり、再生である。
松下は、自ら開発した装置によって生まれた素材を「時間」として捉え、重ね、連ね、空間へと展開する。
その行為は、無意識と必然のあいだで繰り返され、破壊が新たな創造へと変わる瞬間を内包している。
本展のテーマ「COEXIST（共存）」は、自然と人間、技術と感性、環境と文明が対立するのではなく、循環しながら共に在る可能性を示している。
Since ancient times, human beings have lived by repeatedly engaging in acts of creation and destruction.
Life and death. Existence and nothingness. Emergence and disappearance.It is in the space between these opposing forces that human activity truly exists.
The works of Kohei Matsushita attempt to make this “in-between” visible.
The carbonization technology he has researched and developed over many years first destroys the original function of discarded materials, then—through heat and time—transforms them into objects with entirely new value and meaning.They become agents of water purification, soil regeneration, and alternative energy.This is not disappearance, but transformation—an act of regeneration.
Matsushita regards the materials produced by his self-developed carbonization devices as “time” itself, layering and connecting them to unfold within space.
This process, situated between intention and instinct, repeatedly gives rise to moments in which destruction turns into creation.
The theme of this exhibition, COEXIST, expresses the possibility that nature and humanity, technology and sensibility, environment and civilization need not stand in opposition, but can exist together in a continuous cycle.
